Session: Functional Connectivity: MRI Measures of Spontaneous Fluctuations in Intrinsic Networks Title: Spontaneous Signal Fluctuations in Intrinsic Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
Highlights • Spontaneous hemodynamic fluctuations display spatio-temporal organization. • Task-free fMRI has become a powerful approach for studying properties of large-scale brain networks and their clinical implications. • There remain challenges in interpreting results of task-free fMRI studies, as the neural origins of spontaneous hemodynamic signals are not well understood and fMRI data also contain non-neural (noise) fluctuations.

Resting-state activity in development and maintenance of normal brain function.
One of the most intriguing recent discoveries concerning brain function is that intrinsic neuronal activity manifests as spontaneous fluctuations of the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional MRI signal. These BOLD fluctuations exhibit temporal synchrony within widely distributed brain regions known as resting-state networks. Resting-state networks are present in the waking state, durin...
متن کاملMapping functional connectivity based on synchronized CMRO2 fluctuations during the resting state
Synchronized low-frequency fluctuations in the resting state functional MRI (fMRI) signal have been suggested to be associated with functional connectivity in brain networks. However, the underlying mechanism of this connectivity is still poorly understood, with the synchronized fluctuations could either originate from hemodynamic oscillations or represent true neuronal signaling. To better int...
متن کاملCaffeine increases the temporal variability of resting-state BOLD connectivity in the motor cortex
Correlations between spontaneous fluctuations in the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal measured with functional MRI are finding increasing use as measures of functional connectivity in the brain, where differences can potentially predict cognitive performance and diagnose disease. Caffeine, which is a widely consumed neural stimulant and vasoactive agent, has been found to decreas...
متن کاملVerbal fluency and intrinsic brain activity in Alzheimer’s disease
Growing evidence from task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies consistently indicates network abnormalities in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients (1,2). While a picture is emerging on how these changes affect cognition and behavior at various stages of the disease, there is less understanding of the changes in functional connectivity between spatially distant brain areas i...
متن کاملNeuronal correlates of spontaneous fluctuations in fMRI signals in monkey visual cortex: Implications for functional connectivity at rest.
Recent studies have demonstrated large amplitude spontaneous fluctuations in functional-MRI (fMRI) signals in humans in the resting state. Importantly, these spontaneous fluctuations in blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signal are often synchronized over distant parts of the brain, a phenomenon termed functional-connectivity. Functional-connectivity is widely assumed to reflect interregi...
